Strengthening the Production and Value Addition Capacity of Bio-Fertilizer in the Binayi Community Forest, Nawalpur, Gandaki Province

Projects Overview

Nepal Bioscience Research Laboratory Pvt. Ltd. provided technical support to strengthen the production and value addition capacity of the biofertilizer group in Binayi Community Forest, Nawalpur. The project was supported by FAO of the United Nations and implemented with the Binayi Community Forest User Group.

The project addressed forest fire risk, unmanaged forest biomass, soil degradation, and limited access to sustainable agricultural inputs. Through scientific composting, microbial enrichment, training, product development, and community mobilization, forest biomass was converted into a value-added biofertilizer product known as “Binayi Jaibik Mal.”

Our Impact

The project transformed unmanaged forest biomass from a fire hazard into a productive agricultural resource. It supported forest fire risk reduction, improved soil health, strengthened local livelihoods, and promoted climate-smart agriculture.

Community members, including women and marginalized groups, received hands-on training in biomass handling, composting, biofertilizer production, soil health monitoring, and sustainable farming practices. Local champions were trained to continue production, quality monitoring, and farmer awareness activities.

The initiative also helped position Binayi Community Forest as a model for community-led forest biomass management and biofertilizer production in Nepal.

Key Results

  • Treated over 500 metric tons of forest biomass, reducing forest fire risk.
  • Strengthened local biofertilizer production capacity.
  • Developed the value-added product “Binayi Jaibik Mal.”
  • Conducted training and workshops on forest biomass management, composting, and biofertilizer production.
  • Promoted replacement of chemical fertilizers with eco-friendly biofertilizers.
  • Improved community knowledge on soil health, organic matter, and beneficial microorganisms.
  • Supported local employment and income-generation opportunities.
  • Enhanced awareness of climate-smart agriculture and biodiversity conservation.
  • Built the foundation for branding, packaging, and market linkage of community-produced biofertilizer.

Product Highlights

The developed biofertilizer showed strong nutrient value, including organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. It was also enriched with native agriculturally beneficial microorganisms such as nitrogen-fixing bacteria, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, and potassium-solubilizing bacteria.

This makes the product suitable for improving acidic soils, enhancing nutrient cycling, supporting crop growth, and reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers.

Long-Term Vision

The project provides a scalable model for transforming forest biomass into biofertilizer, reducing wildfire risks, restoring soil health, and creating community-based green enterprises. With continued technical support, market development, and quality assurance, Binayi Community Forest can become a national example of sustainable forest biomass management and climate-resilient agriculture.

Turning forest biomass into biofertilizer, livelihoods, and climate resilience.
